Hungry deer

Member Barry Solman was out again today taking shots at his favorite subject. According to local naturalists quoted in The Gazette, sighting of deer near busy intersections in the vicinity of the Arboretum is due to nutritional stress in the herd. “Heavy snow cover in early spring means buds and other undergrowth that deer normally eat is unavailable. At the same time, deep snow makes mobility difficult; energy spent searching for food can outstrip energy derived from eating it.”
